Meet Robert, one of our fantastic support workers. Robert has also been a volunteer for the East Shropshire Talking Newspaper for many years, and recently received an Award from the Sheriff of Shropshire for his work. We’d like to extend huge congratulations to Robert from all of us at Vision Homes.
Here’s Robert to tells us more about his award…
“My recent award by the High Sheriff of Shropshire was in recognition of my work in the community, mainly in connection with East Shropshire Talking Newspaper. I originally went along to the inaugural meeting of this charity way back in 1990 , and said I would like to be a reader. When the group found out that I worked for a bank I was immediately taken on board as Treasurer! I thought it would be fine for a couple of years, but here we are, 30 years later and I am still involved with ESTN, now holding the position of Chairman.
Over the years I have covered various positions and found great fulfilment in being involved with such a worthy cause. I especially enjoy meeting people and have made many recorded interviews with celebrities when they are “in town” so to speak. My archive contains interview with the following:
- Dame Barbara Cartland (my very first interviewee)
- Cannon and Ball
- Roy Hudd
- Ken Dodd
- George Alagiah (BBC news Reader)
- Gerry Marsden
- Jimmy Tarbuck
- John Nettles
- Michael Portillo
- The Drifters
- Zoe Lyons …to mention but a few names!
I am so pleased to have received this award although there are many other volunteers involved as well. I have always made it my mantra to help people who are less fortunate than myself and that includes people who are visually impaired.
The loss of sight can be catastrophic and so we at ESTN do our bit to help such people as best we can.”
